Understanding Lasik Risks - Is This Surgery Suitable For Me?

by Richard Farley

Lasik eye surgery has been an incredibly successful surgical solution for many people looking to improve/cure their eye defects. For example, many people with myopia and hyperopia have been able to go through their lives without the need to wear glasses or contact lenses after this kind of operation. And, many people with astigmatism have seen significant improvements in the quality of their vision.

But, as with any surgical procedure, this kind of surgery will not suit everyone. There are medical conditions and issues with the eyes themselves that can actually make you a bad candidate for this kind of surgery. These include:

#1 Refractive Instability — if you have had changes in your vision in the last 12 months then you will generally not be advised to have this kind of surgery. So, for example, if your prescription for your glasses/contacts has changed then you might be advised to wait a while. Changes in hormones can also cause this issue so, for this reason, you probably shouldn’t have this kind of surgery if you are under 20, if you have diabetes, if you are pregnant/breastfeeding or if you are taking certain types of medicine that could affect the stability of your vision.

#2 Medical Conditions/Medication — some conditions and medications may not make you a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery. This is something that you should discuss in depth with your doctor. So, for example, if you have certain eye diseases such as glaucoma or inflammation conditions and if you have already had eye surgery or a previous eye injury then this may not be a suitable solution for you. Certain medications may also be an issue here especially ones that have an effect on wound healing such as some medicines used to treat diabetes, auto-immune conditions and immuno-deficiency problems.

#3 Your eyes — sometimes you will not be recommended this kind of surgical procedure because your eyes may not indicate the best results. So, for example, if you have large pupils in low light conditions then you may be prone to visual side effects such as haloing and glare after this kind of operation. If your cornea is not thick enough then you could actually suffer from severe visual problems after this kind of surgery as much of the work done here is based on the cornea. Even temporary issues such as an eye infection/inflammation or dry eyes could be a negative factor here.

A reputable laser eye surgeon will take the time to go through your medical history and current health before recommending a solution for you here. They will also make sure to test and examine your actual eye(s) in depth before allowing you to have this kind of procedure.

You should not sign up for this kind of procedure if your surgeon doesn’t do these things. Having laser eye surgery if you are not suitable for this kind of procedure can cause problems, visual disturbances and even loss of some vision in certain cases. So, make sure to have the checks in the first place and only to have procedures that you and your eyes are passed fit for.
