Tips for a Healthy Back

Unfortunately back pain will affect of 80% of the population at some point in our lives. It is important to know what we can to keep our backs healthy.

When you are in front of your computer you need to have proper support. Set your chair so that your knees are slightly higher than your hips. If you have arm rests be sure they support a 90 degree angle of your arms. Your monitor needs to be directly in front of you.

If you talk on the phone a lot be sure to use a head set or speaker phone. So you won’t add any stress to your neck muscles and shoulders.

When you are driving be sure that you have plenty of lower back support. If you don’t, roll up a towel to put behind you. Sit so you don’t have to reach for the steering wheel.

Walking is great therapy for your back. Try to walk 30 minutes every day. Walking will loosen up your back and it makes you feel better.

Alternate with ice and heat. If you have been doing something out of the ordinary and your muscles are sore I recommend heat. If your back is just sore and inflamed try some ice.

Make exercise a daily routine. If you want relief it’s a really important part of keeping your back healthy. Focus on exercises to strengthen your core, this is important for supporting your back. Try some exercises that strengthen specific back muscles.

You need to drink a minimum of 8-10 glasses of water every day. Your spinal discs are hydraulic and made of 80% water! If you don’t drink enough water your body will deplete water from discs making them very brittle.
