Student Health Practices Questioned at Universities in NY
If you’re a college student or a parent of a college student worried about health insurance through the college years, you’re not the only one. New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is currently investigating the deals between health insurance companies and universities.
The target is those universities requiring students to have a specific health plan to be able to attend that school. Especially the ones that are getting a kick back for using a specific company.
Even though a lot of students have health coverage from their parents, a lot of times the university health center does not take that coverage, states the NEw York Times.
Alternatively, they accept only the universities preferred coverage. President of College Parents of America, James A. Boyle states, “[Offending] campus health centers do not accept [their parents' coverage] as payment for service. Instead, some schools force the student, as a condition of enrollment, to purchase health insurance policies offered by the school.”
Cuomo has asked, formally, requested that some New York universities keep record of their dealings with insurance companies. .”With students and their families being financially squeezed at every turn, colleges must ensure that they are looking out for students’ best interest first and foremost as opposed to their own financial bottom line,” stated one of Cuomo’s special assistants.
