Why Dance Performances Develop Life Skills

by Sarah Wilkiamson

Dance performances usually occur at the end of a semester or year. Everyone, including student’s and their family, is usually working towards the performance because it’s such a great experience for everyone. It’s a great opportunity for Grandparents to come along and either watch or help, too.

Performances will give your child something to aim for. They will not see the dance lessons as a set of meaningless dance steps and routines that need to be practiced. The performance will be a goal to be achieved. This will teach them the advantages of setting a goal and working to achieve it.

All this adds up to discipline, especially when the performance is only a few weeks away. It might even lead to some stress when people realize they haven’t worked hard enough, but all of this is a good learning process, and the stress is usually felt by the teachers not the children.

When the dance routines have more meaning your child will practice harder. This will enable them be more disciplined. Discipline is a hard thing to learn but is a very important life skill. When your child gets into the habit of practicing their dance skills on a daily basis they will be learning how to discipline themselves. The resulting performance will show them the rewards of all their hard work.

Confidence is another thing that can’t be taught. Confidence has to be developed through achievements and participation. Children develop confidence through their own success and the success of the group or team they are with. Confidence is a big part of a child’s personality.

Another important life skill is the ability to work with others as part of a team. Dance teaches children very early that they must all pull together if they are to have any success. As they work towards a performance very strong friendships are built.

Performances are about family as well as the students, and it’s not uncommon for other family members to show up in support. Family members are often asked to help out, perhaps with costume design, catering or just with the purchase of a ticket. This sort of contribution means that the whole family effectively becomes part of the team.

It is very important to select a dance school that allows family participation. The teacher should have enough interest in your child’s tuition to have open discussion with a parent. Also the school should allow the family to observe the dance classes and see the progress of young students. This gives a lot of satisfaction to the parents involved and other family members will be intrigued to see how the dance performance is developing.
